This recent piece in the New York Times points out that a more natural and balanced approach to farming can (surprise, surprise) equal or exceed the results of factory farming- Less waste, less polutants, and all at no loss of profits.
The author points out yet another problem with dualistic thinking- That we have more options than factory farming or organic small farms. It is entirely possible to take a sane, healthy, natural approach that uses, rather than abuses, our technology.

RE: A Better Way to Farm
Good old fashioned farming where a farm is a closed system of vegitation and livestock with proper rotation of each.
ASP isn't organic, though we try to stick with organic feed and methods. There is a place for chemicals but they're used ever so sparingly. Goats are prone to worms so I use Ivermectin, if I could find an herbal method that worked as well I'd use that instead.
Goats browse the woody brush, pigs go in after to loosen stumps and turn the soil. Both fertilize as they go and the chickens come in to eat any pests and scratch in the droppings. Thanks to the chickens I haven't had to turn a compost pile in years, just shovel it onto the raised beds and let er rip.
